Sharpie Coffee Filters

We discovered this project by accident whilst doing a different activity. Simple scribbles of markers can be turned into the most beautiful abstract art.

Materials

  • Coffee Filters
  • Eye Dropper
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Sharpies

Instructions

    1. Draw a design on a coffee filter using a Sharpie Pen
    2. Drop small drops of rubbing alcohol onto the coffee filter and watch as the alcohol starts to dissolve the sharpie ink and the colors spread and mingle across the coffee filter.

    Tips

    1. We found that this activity was most successful when dark colors were used in moderation and when the coverage of color was limited
    2. You will want to be careful what type of surface you do this activity on - the sharpie pens will stain. Be careful to cover any surfaces you wish to protect

if you do this on a plain white T-shirt and tumble dry for twenty minutes once set, you can wear your fantastic design(s)!
