I was a little worried it would be too simplistic and childish for my 10yo, but I needn't have worried. The book was a delight for all of us, from my 10yo to her grandma.
It was a lot of fun to read aloud. The cadence and writing style are just plain enjoyable to read. The story is completely unrealistic and silly (talking cats, birds that keep secrets, crocodiles that love lollipops, etc), but it is told in such a way that you really get into the story.
There is drama in the story, but nothing heavy, so if you have sensitive kids this is a good read for something entertaining but without death, sickness and fighting.
This particular version of the book has all three tales in one book, which is perfect. Each tale led easily right into the next, and it made it very easy to tell the whole story as one tale.
If you are considering this book, just order it. It's a super-easy read, and it truly is enjoyable for all ages.
This is a wonderful book to introduce your children to chapter books because there are a few pictures that are well spaced out that keeps their interest, but also the storytelling is engaging. I was enthralled too and never got bored (some kids stories, let's face it, aren't as much fun for us to read as for them). My daughter went to bed with this book, carried around with her, acted out all the scenes with her younger sister and now has moved on to other chapter books (Magic Tree House Series, just as great!). I highly recommend this book for kids 4 and up (my 3 year old get's a little bored and wants more pictures and ends up picking up other books while we read this one). This book will always hold a special place in my heart for helping to get my 5 year old to love chapter books...
Now, almost 20 years later, a new baby made me purchase this set that is one book that includes all three titles. It's hardcover, and illustrated with subtle pictures. The little boy outwits crocodiles with lollipops, saves a dragon with whom he shares tangerines, and goes on wild journeys that a 3-5 year old would especially love.
While it would be considered a higher level of reading (illustrations are only on every third or fourth page), the story is vibrant enough to keep my 3.5 year old interested in what happens next. The content has some suspense and just the right amount of scariness...not enough for nightmares but enough to make him beg me to read more.
This is the 50th anniversary copy for a reason: five decades of fans can't be wrong!
